Chic Looks from Zara (and a note to brick and mortar stores)

I absolutely love these looks from Zara, but if they weren't posted on their website, chances are, I would never have seen them, much less blogged about them.  Don't get me wrong, I love going into brick and mortar stores on a Saturday afternoon as much as the next professionelle, but because I do so much of my shopping online, I am often disapointed when stores aren't well organized or don't have items in my size.  Zara is sort of the worst of all worlds in this sense since their stores are often messy and they don't offer online shopping capabilities.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I believe that women who grew up in the internet era have higher standards for efficiency when it comes to shopping.  Who wants to dig through racks of clothes when we can sort and search for exactly what we want online?  But . . . I digress . . . below are some lovely looks from Zara.  Hopefully you'll be able to find them in a Zara store near you.

  1. Hello,

I just found your blog through your message on Extra Petite Blog and your input about Zara... I was curious to know more.
I am french, petite (if my conversion chart is right 4"11) and professional although not legal (banking). And as I did not find was I was looking for (I mean professional blog for petite women with sensible clothes elegant but not too formal)I naturally turned my eyes toward US and UK blogs. I mean of course we are many petites in Europe (hence in France too) but I do not think we identify ourselves as a "petite community" worth enough dedicated blogs.
I do not have a lot of clothes from Zara but I did find that most of the time XS does nearly fit (I say nearly because of the length). And recently I even found some XXS clothes.
We do not have special clothes brand or range for petites (as in UK) so it can be quite a challenge to find suitable clothes and shoes! But nevertheless we can still manage with part of the "regular" clothes sold.
I would be very interested to read more about you as an inspiration for professional women even if in France we are not so formal and rules lead that in the US in matter of professionnal outfits or do's and don't.
    Excuse my english needs improving.

  2. Hi! Thanks for commenting! I'm actually going to France this summer and I'm so inspired by how effortlessly chic French women look. I love that in France, your rules for dressing professionally aren't so formal. I'm all about pushing fashion boundaries at work so long as your outfit isn't too casual or too revealing.

I bought the two Zara dresses I featured in this blog post (I'm wearing the floral one at work right now!) and they come to just knee length on me (I'm 5'0"). That's the one perk about being petite, we can wear dresses that would be too short for work on taller women! The blue flutter dress also fit, although I didn't think it was too flattering on someone who is petite (and obviously, you'd need to wear a blazer to make it work appropriate). The tops I featured are super cute in person, but cut a little bit too long for petite women (same with the trench coat). I did notice some white cropped pants at Zara that might be the perfect length for someone who is petite.

Even in the US, there aren't great options for petite women. My favorite for basics is Banana Republic Petite in 00p. I find that Ann Taylor, LOFT ad J Crew are still too big. Asos also has a great petite section. Right now H&M has a few dresses in size 2 that are teeny tiny, so that's worth a shot too. As for small shoes, unfortunately, you'll probably have to buy designer to get the best selection. Usually the more expensive the shoe, the more likely it will come in a smaller size. If you do end up having to purchase expensive shoes, make sure you take them to the cobbler before you even wear them to get an extra sole and heels put in to make them last longer.

Best of luck and look out for a post dedicated to petite professional clothing in the coming weeks!

  3. Ah it is good to have your message.
When you're coming over to France remember that sales starts on June 22.
You can find some nice brands in France but none for petites.
So you do have to try and try again.
Same thing for the shoes one must not expect to find great shoes if one does not try to go to rather high range ones to find smaller size and fit.
Well in my opinion tailoring is the best option anyway as far as you can spend money in it. I do this a lot this year as I am shopping my closet and have a lot of clothes that laid untouched for quite long, tailored. And my life changed literaly.
